Burkard Industries has been awarded the unique distinction of being named the No. 1 finishing shop in North America in 2018 by Products Finishing magazine, a trade publication which has covered the industry since 1938.
Every year for the past four years, Products Finishing magazine has conducted a survey that analyzes hundreds of finishing companies in four main areas, which are Current Finishing Technology, Finishing Practices and Performances, Business Strategies and Performances, and Training and Human Resources. The magazine then publishes a list of the top 50 shops in North America. Burkard Industries offers e-coating, powder coating, and military painting services. The company also is certified to ISO-9001:2015. The company is located at 35300 Kelly Road in Clinton Township, Michigan, which is close to Detroit. It was founded in 1934 by John A. Burkard, great-grandfather to Jay Burkard.View Magazine
“I am extremely proud of our team in achieving our core goal of being the best in the industry. Being recognized as Products Finishing’s No. 1 Top Coating Shop in North America validates that goal,” said Jay Burkard, president of Burkard Industries.
“Burkard Industries has established itself as one of the best finishing operations in the industry,” said Tim Pennington, editor of Products Finishing magazine. “In fact, Burkard Industries is the only finishing shop to achieve top five status every year since Products Finishing started its Top Shop program for coating shops four years ago. There are only 10 coating shops that have made the Top 50 list from the beginning, so Burkard being in the top five every year shows excellent consistency.”
Earning the award for No. 1 finishing shop in North America means Burkard Industries will be not just listed in the magazine, but given the honor of being featured on the front cover of Products Finishing magazine’s September 2018 issue. It won’t be the first time Burkard Industries has been featured in the magazine. The family-owned and operated company, established 84 years ago, was written about in the magazine in October 2015 for its incentive program for employees and its data-driven approach to improvement. That program, started in 2014 at Burkard Industries, resulted in a payout of about $360,000 in employee performance-based incentives in 2014. In the October 2015 article, Products Finishing wrote, “[Burkard Industries] prides itself on being meticulously data-driven, using gathered data to assess the company’s strengths and weaknesses.” That meticulousness has paid off.
“We have a very strong team, both on the floor and in the office that work very hard every day. I am happy for our employees, because now they can go home and tell their family and friends that they are the best at what they do” – John A. Burkard
Burkard industries began powder coating in 1988, expanded that in 1995 and doubled the plant in size from 20,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet. The company then added an e-coat, or electrocoat, system in 2002 and expanded its factory to 78,000 square feet. Products Finishing magazine featured Burkard Industries’ e-coating in November 2003. In 2008, Burkard Industries expanded services to offer liquid painting for military operations, or CARC. It now offers electrocoating, powder coating, military CARC and coating and masking.
